Salamanca, often called the “Golden City” for the warm glow of its sandstone buildings, is a place where centuries of stories are etched into every wall. Visit its historic center to wander through cobbled streets lined with architectural marvels. The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is one of the oldest in Europe and still buzzes with student life.

Lake Toba is another of the island's spectacular sights - a remarkable volcanic crater set in the middle of northern Sumatra, 176km from Medan. The lake is huge (the largest in South-East Asia), occupying the caldera of a giant volcano that collapsed on itself after a massive eruption some 100,000 years ago.

On Cook Strait sits Wellington, New Zealand's charming windy city. Must-sees here include the waterfront, the lovely beaches, and the Wellington Cable Car that takes riders to botanical gardens. For cultural exposure, visit The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, with its Maori national treasures and art gallery. Llandudno has two beaches on either side of the town. The quieter West Shore with it's sandy beach has a view of the Conwy Estuary, Isle of Anglesy and Puffin Island, site of a Cistercian monastery. Spanning over two miles of the crescent bay is the North Shore. On the pier there are places of amusement including Professor Peabody's Playplace containing supervised activities for the children. On the opposite side is Craig-Y-Don, a paddling pool for the toddlers.

Think of it as a beach a day even on Leap Year. That's right, 366 beautiful beaches encircle this tropical island paradise, the focus of centuries of battles between Spain, France, Great Britain and Denmark. The Dane's influence has been the strongest.

Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County and serves as a regional center in California's North Bay. Set among vineyards, oak woodlands, and rolling hills, the city combines an established urban core with easy access to Sonoma County's agricultural landscape.
