Solitaire is a small settlement in central Namibia, positioned where routes from Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Sesriem, and the Namib-Naukluft region meet. Its isolated location among gravel plains, rocky hills, and dry river valleys makes it a practical stopping point on journeys through the Namib Desert. The settlement is best known for its bakery, fuel station, general store, and scattered collection of old vehicles that have become part of its recognizable appearance. Although small in size, Solitaire occupies an important position on the road toward Sossusvlei and the surrounding desert attractions.

Solitaire developed as a remote farming and service settlement in an area where livestock farming depends heavily on limited rainfall and seasonal water. Its name and local history are associated with the isolated nature of the surrounding landscape. The settlement has long served travelers, farmers, and transport operators crossing this sparsely populated part of Namibia. Nearby Spreetshoogte Pass provides a route between the interior highlands and the Namib Desert, while the Kuiseb and Gaub river valleys form important geographic features around the settlement. The surrounding landscape is one of Solitaire's main attractions. Roads lead west toward the Namib-Naukluft National Park and onward to Sesriem and Sossusvlei, where large dunes surround the Tsauchab River's dry basin. The route through the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons reveals rocky valleys, gravel plains, and changing desert vegetation. Spreetshoogte Pass is another notable nearby feature, with viewpoints across the transition between the central highlands and the Namib Desert.
