Khinaliq is a high-mountain village in northern Azerbaijan, situated in the Greater Caucasus Mountains at an elevation of more than 2,000 meters. The village is built on steep slopes above the Qudyalchay valley, with tightly packed stone houses rising in terraces along the mountainside. Surrounding peaks, alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and deep valleys create a rugged landscape shaped by the high-altitude environment. Khinaliq is part of the Cultural Landscape of Khinalig People and “Köç Yolu” Transhumance Route, a UNESCO World Heritage property that extends beyond the village into summer and winter pastures connected by a traditional migration route.
Khinaliq is home to the Khinalig people, a distinct community with its own language and cultural traditions. Their way of life has traditionally centered on semi-nomadic livestock herding, with seasonal movement between high mountain summer pastures and lower winter grazing areas. This movement follows the Köç Yolu, a seasonal route extending about 200 kilometers through several landscapes. Within the village, mosques, shrines, cemeteries, and traditional stone houses reflect local religious and social traditions. The compact arrangement of homes is also an adaptation to the steep terrain and limited space available for settlement.
The landscape around Khinaliq provides opportunities for hiking and exploring the high mountain environment. The village is surrounded by peaks including Shahdag and Gizilgaya, while alpine and subalpine meadows extend across the surrounding uplands. Ancient paths connect the settlement with pastures, springs, shrines, and other features of the cultural landscape. The Köç Yolu includes traditional camping areas, irrigation systems, bridges, and places of worship associated with seasonal pastoral movement. Within the village, the Khinaliq Ethnographic Museum provides information about local history, household objects, clothing, tools, and the community's traditional way of life.
Food in Khinaliq reflects the pastoral economy of the mountain community, with dairy products, meat, grains, herbs, and locally available mountain plants forming important ingredients. Cheese, yogurt, butter, and other preserved dairy foods are particularly suited to a lifestyle based on livestock herding. Local dishes are influenced by the need to prepare nourishing food in a high-altitude environment where agriculture is limited. Khinaliq is also distinctive for its traditional knowledge of mountain pastures, weather, livestock, and seasonal movement. The continuing relationship between the village, its grazing lands, and the Köç Yolu makes the area an important example of a living mountain cultural landscape.
