Welcome to Tobago, a cosmopolitan mix. Here you find the allure of an old-world civilization overlaid with new world energy. This is the birthplace of calypso, limbo and steelband. The culture and heritage of our society boasts ethnic influences from every continent.
The Elbe is one of the Central Europe's greatest rivers, rising in the northern Czech Republic, traversing through Bohemia and Germany, and flowing into the North Sea not far from Hamburg. The river and its route have been largely untouched, so wildlife visibly abounds along its wetlands and wooded regions. Other scenery includes terraced vineyards and charming wine villages.
Ninh Binh, located about 100 kilometers south of Hanoi, offers a landscape shaped by limestone karsts, winding rivers, and flooded rice paddies. Often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land,” the area is best explored by rowboat. At Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, boat routes pass through caves, ancient pagodas, and valleys surrounded by towering cliffs. Local rowers often use their feet to paddle, an unusual technique that surprises many first-time visitors.
On South Plaza Island, sea lions breed all along the low lying northern coast. These sheer cliffs are home for swallow-tail gulls and the beautiful red billed tropic birds. The landscape is dominated by optunia cactus trees. A look under each tree reveals a land iguana patiently waiting for a succulent cactus pad to fall.
Aalborg is the fourth largest city in Denmark and constitutes a natural center for the North Jutland region. In addition Aalborg is Denmark's largest conference center, outside Copenhagen. Aalborg has many cultural attractions which appeal to a wide variety of tastes; a varied night-life and more than 300 restaurants, bars and clubs.
Medan (pop 1.5 million) is the capital of north Sumatra and the third largest city in Indonesia. It is a huge, sprawling city and a popular entry/exit point for travellers. The solid Dutch buildings of the affluent older suburbs inspire images of bloated bureaucrats and burghers from the colonial era, while jerry-built lean-tos house the bulk of its population.
The city's two finest buildings are the Istana Maimoon (Maimoun Palace) and the magnificent black-domed Mesjid Raya. There are some fine examples of European architecture along Jalan Sukarno-Hatta, such as Bank Indonesia and the High Court. There are a number of museums, including the Museum of North Sumatra, which has excellent coverage
of the region's culture and history, and the weaponry-and-warfare-influenced Bukit Barisan Military Museum. Cultural performances can be seen at Taman Budaya.
Much of the budget accommodation is close to the city centre. Jalan Semarang, a small street between Jalan Pandu and Jalan Bandung, has great food stalls offering Indonesian and Chinese meals late into the night.
