Amorgos is an island in the eastern Cyclades, known for its steep rocky coastline, whitewashed villages, stone paths, and broad views across the Aegean Sea. Unlike flatter Cycladic islands, much of Amorgos is mountainous, with Mount Krikelos reaching 821 metres and deep valleys separating its settlements. The main ports are Katapola and Aegiali, while Chora, the island’s inland capital, is built around narrow lanes, small squares, windmills, and traditional Cycladic houses.
Winnipeg sits at the meeting point of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, a location that has shaped its role as a gathering place for thousands of years. Long before it became a modern city, the area was central to Indigenous trade networks, a legacy that remains visible today through institutions like The Forks and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Sighisoara rises above the Târnava Mare River as one of the few medieval citadels in Europe that is still lived in and admired today. Its historic center has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, recognized for its long history as a fortified Saxon settlement and its role in trade and defense on the edges of central Europe. Wander through cobbled alleys framed by pastel-colored houses, and the layers of time feel close at hand, from the city walls and guild towers to busy cafés.
Mesa Verde National Park, nestled in the southwestern corner of Colorado, offers an extraordinary journey into the ancient past of the Ancestral Puebloans. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved cliff dwellings, built into the sheer rock faces of the canyon walls.
Two thousand years have left their mark in Bonn, tracing its development from a Roman camp into the settlement known as "Villa Basilica," and on through the Baroque era's Electoral Palace, which today houses the University.
Lake Toba is another of the island's spectacular sights - a remarkable volcanic crater set in the middle of northern Sumatra, 176km from Medan. The lake is huge (the largest in South-East Asia), occupying the caldera of a giant volcano that collapsed on itself after a massive eruption some 100,000 years ago. In comparison, Krakatau's 1883 effort was little more than a belch. The lake is surrounded by steep mountains, ridges and sandy, pine-sheltered beaches.
