Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and a major cultural and economic center in the southeast of the country. It lies at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, where the broad urban area gives way to forested mountain slopes and alpine terrain. Tree-lined streets, parks, historic neighborhoods, modern buildings, and mountain views define much of the cityscape. Almaty is also known for its orchards and agricultural surroundings, reflected in the city's name, which is associated with apples.
Kolsai Lakes National Park is a protected mountain area in southeastern Kazakhstan, located in the northern Tian Shan east of Almaty. The park is centered on a chain of alpine lakes surrounded by steep forested slopes, rocky peaks, and mountain valleys. The three Kolsai Lakes occupy different elevations along the Kolsai River, with the landscape changing from coniferous forest at lower levels to alpine terrain higher in the mountains.
Turkistan is a historic city in southern Kazakhstan and an important center of Islamic culture in Central Asia. Located in the Turkistan Region, the city developed around an oasis landscape between the Syr Darya River and the Karatau Mountains. Its best-known landmark is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a monumental Timurid-era building and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lake Issyk is a mountain lake in southeastern Kazakhstan, located in a gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau about 60 kilometers east of Almaty. The lake lies at roughly 1,800 meters above sea level within the Ile-Alatau National Park and is surrounded by steep rocky slopes, coniferous forests, and alpine meadows.
Charyn Canyon National Park is a protected area in southeastern Kazakhstan, east of Almaty, centered on the dramatic Charyn Canyon carved by the Charyn River. The park covers a landscape of deep gorges, dry valleys, cliffs, and semi-desert plains at the edge of the Tian Shan. Charyn Canyon is the park's best-known feature, with layers of sedimentary rock exposed along steep walls shaped by erosion.
Saty is a small mountain village in the Almaty Region of southeastern Kazakhstan, set at the foot of the Tian Shan ranges. It serves as the main gateway to Kolsai Lakes National Park and is the usual base for visits to the Kolsai Lakes and nearby Kaindy Lake. The village is surrounded by open valleys, mountain slopes, and coniferous forests, giving it a rural setting closely connected with the surrounding landscape.
