Covering about 3,500 hectares, the reserve protects a landscape of dry savanna, thorny scrub, seasonal water sources, and large baobab trees.

The lake is best known for its high salt concentration, which can produce pink, reddish, or mauve tones under particular conditions of sunlight and water chemistry.
